Access to Recreation Fund

Through the generosity of the W. K. Kellogg Foundation in Battle Creek, the Community Foundation has created this Access to Recreation Fund. This fund provides grants to support programs, projects and organizations in St. Clair County that improve access for people with disabilities.

Extreme Pool Makeover (Algonac)

The joy of being surrounded by cool water on a hot day is now a reality for people of all abilities at the community swimming pool in Algonac. The Access to Recreation initiative and its partners have made the pool entrance and bathhouse universally accessible to all. It is now able to be used by everyone in the community including people using wheelchairs.

Tree House (Pine River Nature Center)

Our tree house is located in the center of the 90—acre Pine River Nature Center and is the only publicly owned, universally accessible tree house in Michigan. It gives visitors a bird’s-eye view of the forest and wetlands near the Pine River and can be reached from a handicapped accessible woodland trail, making the tree house experience available to people of all ages and abilities.

Canoe & Kayak Launch (Fort Gratiot/Port Huron/St. Clair)

The waterways of St. Clair County have been made more accessible to people of all abilities through three canoe and kayak launches. One launch is located off of North River Road in Fort Gratiot, the Port Huron launch is off 7th Street and another is at the Boat Harbor in St. Clair. The St. Clair and Port Huron sites have installed a unique transfer system for people with disabilities to transfer independently and the Fort Gratiot side is planning to install one as well.
