Posted on March 3, 2010
The Women’s Initiative, in collaboration with fifteen local partners, will provide 3,000 books and promote reading to students at eight elementary schools. “The Family Read Night program provides a fun positive family evening with a focus on reading and includes crafts, a book walk, prizes and celebrity readers. Every child attending will receive at least one free book to take home.” said Marge Guinther, member of the Women’s Initiative Family Read Night Planning Committee. Belle River Elementary School will kick off the 2010 Family Read Night program on March 10th thanks to funding partner, Cargill, Inc. Nancy Ellery, Cargill representative and program volunteer, said Cargill realizes the importance of reading. “Getting kids excited about reading changes their future. The Family Read Night program brings books to life and makes reading a lot of fun.”
The Blue Water YMCA, Acheson Foundation, Quota Club of Port Huron and Chase Bank are partnering with the Women’s Initiative to offer students at Cleveland, Roosevelt and Woodrow Wilson Elementary schools a combined Family Read and Fitness Night. The March 18th event held at the YMCA will focus on the importance and fun of reading and fitness. After volunteering at prior Family Read Nights, YMCA Executive Director, Denise Books proposed adding a fitness component to the already popular reading events. “Participating in daily physical activity helps keep students healthy and supports their ability to learn.” Brooks, also Chair of the Women’s Initiative, added that “Hosting a Family Read and Fitness Night is a natural fit for the YMCA as we strive to build strong kids, strong families and strong communities.”
