Cargill donates $15,000 and YAC adds $10,000 to Back to School 2010
Posted on June 28, 2010
Cargill awarded $15,000 to provide over 1,150 at-risk kids with backpacks and school supplies and YAC granted $10,000 to fund 770 kids. The Foundation’s 2010 goal is to raise $42,900 to help 3,300 kids have the school supplies they need to start school.
Cargill representative and Back to School volunteer, Nancy Ellery said that “Education is a priority for Cargill and the Back to School program focuses on helping at-risk kids succeed in school.” she added that “With the current unemployment rate we knew the need would be greater, so, with the help of a Cargill Corporate matching grant, we were able to increase our support again this year.” Cargill volunteers know first hand the positive impact their donation and involvement in the Back to School program has on kids through out St. Clair County.
The Youth Advisory Council (YAC) more than doubled their support to Back to School this year. YAC, a group of students representing most high schools in St. Clair County, realized the economy will have a double impact on the backpack give-a-way program. YAC member Andrew Fitzsimmons said that “Because of the economy, YAC felt that more kids would be in line to receive backpacks and donations may be down.”
The Women’s Initiative is seeking community support to raise the remaining $17,900 to reach their goal of providing 3,300 backpacks full of school supplies to low income kids. It only costs $13 to sponsor 1 child.
