March is reading month and the Women’s Initiative has teamed up with 15 community groups and organizations to promote reading and fitness to over 3,000 students.
Belle River Elementary in Marine City kicked off the Family Read Night series on March 10th with funding and volunteer partner Cargill. The Olympics were the focus for Belle River Elementary’s month of reading activities. The “Going For The Gold” theme followed through in the books that Cargill purchased and gave out at the event. Adventure filled stories about skiing, snowboarding and various winter sports stories were a hit with students.
Over 270 students and 180 family members from Cleveland, Roosevelt and Woodrow Wilson Elementary schools gathered at the Blue Water YMCA for a Family Read and Fitness Night on March 18th. The YMCA, Acheson Foundation, Quota Club of Port Huron, CHASE Bank, Blue Water Transportation, All Star Venting, Chili’s, Cracker Barrel, Icehawks, McDonald’s, Port Huron Fire Department and over 60 volunteers partnered with the Women’s Initiative to offer a positive event for at-risk kids and their families.
Some amazing stories have surfaced about how the event have impacted the kids. Coby’s “giggle” was all the talk of the staff of Cleveland Elementary. Coby is in the 3rd grade and his life of overwhelming hardship has created a tough and angry child. At the Family Read and Fitness Night, for the first time, he showed he has a different side. Coby smiled, laughed, relaxed and had a blast!
Port Huron Hospital Foundation, UAW Local 375 and Woman’s Life Club 801 joined the Women’s Initiative to offer a Family Read Night to students and their families at Gardens Elementary in Marysville. Over fifty families participated in the book walk, made crafts and enjoyed hearing books read by the Principal, Mrs. Curley, Michigan House Representative, Phil Pavlov and Marysville School Superintendent, Mr. John Silveri.
Woman’s Life Chapters 11, 611, 702, 757 and 830 continued to promote reading into April at Crull McKinley Elementary School in Port Huron. After a pizza dinner and an evening of crafts and winning books at the book walk, students and their families enjoyed stories read by Celebrity Readers Capt. Mark White of the Port Huron Fire Department and Chirs Martin from Woman’s Life Club 11. Principal, Mrs. Barr secured matching funds that made it possible for each child attending to pick out 2 books to take home as they left.
