Posted on July 19, 2010
After meeting an $180,000 matching grant challenge from the W.K. Kellogg Foundation, the Community Foundation is pleased to announce the first grant recipients of the newly established Access to Recreation Fund. The first round of funding provided grants and business incentives to support organizations and business that promote accessibility. Nonprofit grants were awarded to the YMCA’s Adaptive Aquatics program and the Blue Water Center for Independent Living’s Fun For All program. Business incentives were awarded to Infuz Limited, Architects/Planners and Stevens Pool Ladder, LLC.
The Access to Recreation Initiative promotes the use of universal design, which goes beyond minimum ADA standards. Noteworthy projects include Michigan’s first and only universally designed Tree House located at the Pine River Nature Center, an Extreme Pool Makeover to the city pool in Algonac and accessible canoe and kayak launches at county parks throughout the region.
