Algonac/Clay Community Fund 2007 Grants and Scholarship Awards

The recently held Algonac/Clay Community Fund “Cinco de Mayo” dinner/auction was a success raising over $10,000 to add to its endowment fund.

Randy Maiers, President of the Community Foundation of St. Clair County spoke at the Cinco Dinner and congratulated the Algonac/Clay Community Fund for the success it has had in the short time of its existence.

At the dinner the 2007 grants were announced and grant committee members Mike Hulewicz, Mark Kapanowski, Linda Minter and Gary Tuzinowski distributed checks to the recipients. The Algonac Fire Department received a grant of $900 towards its goal of replacing the departments aging Zodiac boat, $1,000 to the Algonac Housing Commission to restore the wooden decks on the senior housing building, $500 to Algonac Little League for a water line service at the little league field, $250 to Cub Scout Pack 222 to assist in the purchase of an enclosed trailer, $300 to Downriver Recreation to purchase a portable dance mirror, $1,000 to the friends of the Algonac/Clay Library to purchase and install a flat screen television.

Chairperson Gratopp than announced and introduced the winners of the Fuller/Hansen Scholarships and the Joe Caimi Scholarship. John Darling, Ryan Erdmann and Caitlyn Sharrow each won a $5,000 Scholarship. Danielle Daubee was the winner of the Joe Caimi Scholarship.

Bill Gratopp, Chairman of the Algonac/Clay Fund unveiled the “Honor Board” that the Fund made that will highlight the donors to the fund and the current grant and scholarship winners. The Honor Board will be on view at various locations throughout the Algonac/Clay community. Chairman Gratopp thanked the board for their efforts in planning this event, especially Cindy Babisz, Dinner Committee Chair, Board Member Mike Pellerito for his great auctioneering skills and the businesses and individuals who donated auction items and the dinner attendees. He thanked and gave a special award to Cortis Brothers Trucking Co. who bought sixty tickets to the dinner and the Knights of Columbus who donated the use of their hall. Bill especially thanked the individuals at the dinner for their generosity and their belief in the Algonac/Clay Fund motto, “Together we can make a difference”.
