Black River Improvements

Posted on May 30, 2012

The Community Foundation is proud to have such great partners who share our vision for improving the quality of life in the downtowns.  In Port Huron, those partners have recently included SEMCO Energy, who provided the gas lines for the two new fireplaces along the Black River.  The smaller one, near the Quay Street Brewery, is complete and was ready for the visitors and tourists on Memorial weekend.  A second, much larger one, is being built on the northwest side of the Great Lakes Maritime Center, right at the mouth of the Black River.  When it’s done it will be in incredible place to sit by a warm fire on a cool summer evening and watch the freighters and boats.

These two new outdoor fireplaces are part of a multi-year effort to improve public amenities along the Black River.  Other initial components include a new free bike taxi service to compliment the free Shopper’s Shuttle, a giant outdoor chess set, and the relocation of the Mini Welcome Center in the restaurant district.

This first phase was made possible through the financial partnerships of the James Acheson Fund, the Port Huron DDA and the Community Foundation of St. Clair County.
