Chicago lawyer still gives back to his hometown

Posted on March 9, 2017

Jim Nyeste grew up in Port Huron with his parents, Stephen and Shirley, and sister, Bonnie. He was a student at Port Huron Northern High School, the Class of 1973 Valedictorian.

After high school, Jim attended Michigan State University as a mathematics major and National Merit Scholar. After graduation from MSU, he obtained a law degree from the University of Chicago, where he met his wife, Marla Hand, who was completing her Ph.D. in Art History. Jim practices law in Chicago, primarily handling lawsuits against insurance companies.

Jim and his family are passionate about education, reading, and life-long learning. Three of Jim’s aunts were teachers; his sister Bonnie was a teacher (among other careers); and his wife Marla has been a professor for many years. After Jim’s parents passed away, he set up the Nyeste-Regling Scholarship Fund in their honor. This fund awards scholarships to graduates of Port Huron High or Port Huron Northern high schools. His sister also set up a scholarship fund to support students at a community college in Montana, where she currently lives.

Jim feels fortunate to have escaped the burden of student debt through merit and other scholarships while attending college and law school. He is sincere about helping others attend college and giving back to his hometown.
