Fred Moore

We are all deeply saddened by the passing of our great friend, Fred Moore. He was a leader and a gentleman. He was respected and regarded in a way that we should all aspire to.
Since our foundation became the Community Foundation of St. Clair County in the mid 1980’s, few people have had as much of an impact on our philanthropic efforts as Fred Moore has. As a relative youngster and newcomer to the Foundation, he joined the Foundation in 1992 and was active until his passing this week.
Fred’s leadership abilities and experience from his corporate success translated easily to the Foundation, and in 1996 he became Secretary of the Foundation. That same year he joined the Endowment Committee and in 1997 became Chair of the Finance Committee. The Foundation’s assets in 1997 were just over $12 million. The largest grant that year was a $75,000 grant to the Girl Scouts and total grants that year were $248,000.
Fred became our Treasurer in 1998 and assets were growing dramatically, topping out at over $17 million by the end of ’98.
Fred continued to move up through the leadership of the Foundation until he became Chairman in 2005 and 2006, and over the course of those two years, our total grants were just under $3 million. The Community Foundation had truly become a philanthropic force in the county.
Those two years saw the beginning of another significant accomplishment of the Community Foundation and the Acheson Foundation,….which some of you may have heard about,……Studio 1219.
Fred’s success within the Foundation and the broader community has come easily to him because for him and his family, giving back is what they do. It’s ingrained in their hearts and souls. He and Lezlynne have made too many gifts to mention here, but some of the programs and projects they support include;
- Our Administrative Endowment Fund and our Programs & Services Fund
- Citizens for St. Clair
- Community Investment Fund
- The Women’s Initiative
- The Wyatt Walker Friendship Fund
- East China School District Fund
- Studio 1219
- St. Mary’s School
- And the Back to School events.
If you dig through the records of the Foundation and look at our fund contracts, you’ll see that Fred played a role in creating or establishing the Citizens for St. Clair Fund, the Charles F. Moore Fund, St. Clair Foundation Fund, Mary Moore Fund, St. Clair Rotary Centennial Park Fund, the Fred & Lezlynne Moore Fund, and the Fred Moore Fund.
