Grants edge closer to $2 million

Posted on August 30, 2017

There was no summer break for the Community Foundation’s grant-making committees. So far this year, committees have awarded more than 1.98 million to programs and projects across the region with no intention of slowing down.

The largest percentage of grant dollars has gone to our top priority areas of Community and Economic Prosperity ($778,000+) and Cradle to Career ($422,000+), which focuses on education and skilled trades.

Literacy and Beyond received two grants totaling $27,715 for its 2GEN and Books4Kids: Building Home Libraries programs. The 2GEN program focuses on personalized education plans for young mothers in a GED program as well as free developmental child care for their children while they attend class. Book4Kids buys and distributes books for students at area elementary schools so they can increase access to books at home.

Other grant highlights include:

Blue Water Folk Society was awarded $3,335 for Thumbfest’s Community Involvement track, which gives festival attendees access to instruments. This funding was provided by the Charles & Margaret Anderson Foundation Fund.

The Algonac/Clay Community Fund awarded several grants, including:

  • $1,400 to Algonac Little League for dugout repairs
  • $750 to Algonac Youth Football League for practice equipment
  • $5,000 to the Algonac Rotary Club for the dog park
