Margaret C. Lutz Fund.

Posted on July 19, 2019

This month marks the 15th anniversary of the Margaret C. Lutz Fund. This fund was established by an unrestricted gift from Margaret’s estate. An unrestricted gift allows the Community Foundation the flexibility to change over time. As times change, needs change and these funds allow the Foundation to address our region’s challenges and opportunities.

Grants totaling nearly $60,000 have been awarded to support economic development, family and recreation through local organizations like Mid City Nutrition, Algonac Youth Football, Hunter Hospitality House, Cardinal Mooney Catholic High School and Wonderful News Radio, just to name a few.

Margaret lived modestly, never alluding to her wealth. She was an active member of the St. John’s United Methodist Church of Christ and known for her generosity to friends and fellow parishioners, especially on their birthdays.  Margaret was born and raised in Port Huron. She graduated from Port Huron Junior College in 1928 and then attended the University of Michigan where she met her husband, Lauren J. Lutz. After college graduation, they moved to New York but once retired they moved back to Port Huron.

The Margaret C. Lutz fund is one of 17 unrestricted funds out of 250 funds that support the ever-changing needs of our community. Since the Community Foundation’s inception, unrestricted gifts have benefited a wide range of programs, projects and organizations in our region based on the Community Foundation’s current priority areas. We’re proud to keep Margaret’s legacy alive through her charitable fund.
