Riverwalk Clean-Up
Posted on June 15, 2011
More than 30 people braved the weather forecast on Saturday, June 11th, to participate in the River Walk Clean-Up on the shores of the St. Clair River. The volunteers, from the Quota Club, Port Huron Rotary, Bridges Church, Operation Transformation, SONS and the Community Foundation made quick work of the clean-up.
Tim Hammar, from Hammar Contracting who has donated the heavy machinery necessary, estimates that the volunteers cleaned up 4 – 5 tons of debris. Earlier this year crews from Hammar donated a full day of work and equipment to haul away approximately 100 tons of larger debris from the banks of the river.
The Community Foundation of St. Clair County is in the process of receiving this stretch of shoreline from Jim Acheson as a gift.
The Foundation in turn will work with other partners and funding sources to restore the shoreline to a more natural condition and seek funding from MDOT for a pedestrian trail that will run from one end of the property to the other as a vital link in the Bridge to Bay Trail system.
