Riverwalk Clean-up has begun

Posted on May 12, 2011

Thanks to the generosity of Hammar Contracting, some of the early phases of the heavy clean-up work for the River Walk project began on May 11th.  Tim Hammar and his crew spent a full day removing some of the larger, heavier and more dangerous pieces of debris along the river bank.  This cleared the way for an expected group of 50+ volunteers on May 15th to do a sweep of the entire shoreline and pick up garbage and debris by hand.

The May 15th clean-up effort is led by the Port Huron Rotary with help from the Fort Gratiot Rotary, Quota Club, Bridges Church and Operation Transformation.  Tonie Babin from Bridges Church is the volunteer coordinator for clean-up day.

The next phase of clean-up requires a permit from the Department of Environmental Quality and Army Corps of Engineers.  The Community Foundation expects the permit to be in place and more clean-up work done by late summer or early fall.  The public shouldn’t expect to see any construction work on the path itself until 2012 at the earliest.
