Scholarship recipient graduates from Duke

Upon graduation from Port Huron Northern High School in 2007, Kim Thomas decided to move her studies to Duke University with the help of the Community Foundation’s John F. and Rose Marie Wismer Scholarship. This past May, Kim finished those studies with not only a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology, but also a Certificate in Markets & Management Studies and a Minor in Religion. If that wasn’t enough, throughout her time at Duke, Kim was active in many extracurricular activities and clubs. She was the Captain of the Duke Dancing Devils (a top ten finisher at the National Competitive Dance Competition), the President of the 150-voice Duke Chapel Choir, and a member of the Senior Gift Committee.
Kim was able to spend some time in Port Huron this past summer with family and friends, before moving on to her next big adventure. Kim has now moved to New York City to begin a job as a Marketing Coordinator with a luxury hair care company, Oribe Hair Care. Although the hair care industry is a new path for Kim, she has always been passionate about the arts and is now learning the art forms involved in styling hair. According to Kim, “Styling combines music, movement, sculpture, vision and inspiration. It is no wonder that I feel both at home and awed by all I experience every day in this industry.”
Although Kim has experienced many new adventures and life lessons at both Duke and now in New York City, she thanks Port Huron, the Wismers, the Community Foundation and her friends and family in Michigan for contributing to her journey thus far. “I truly believe I would not be where I am without your continuous support and admire the belief the Community Foundation has in our community’s youth.”
