Sharon Wilton – Scholarship Parent Spotlight
Posted on June 26, 2015
Over 95 students received college funding from the Community Foundation of St. Clair County this year. One such recipient is Sharon Wilton’s daughter Emily.
“She was very fortunate to have received a scholarship to Northwood University as well as some grant money,” Sharon said. “Emily is extremely motivated and is planning to work to help with the difference we would need to pay.”
Emily received $5,000 from the Kenneth and Verl Fleury Foundation Scholarship Fund.
Sharon is a single mother with a 16-year-old daughter, Megan, still at home. She helps Emily with expenses as much as possible, but rising education costs can make it a struggle.
She added the scholarship from the Community Foundation will ease the financial burden of covering Emily’s remaining education costs.
“Her hard work and commitment to excellence in her work has afforded her many great experiences,” Sharon said. “With the help of the Community Foundation, she will face a great beginning in her continuing education at Northwood.”
Sharon has had some experience with the Community Foundation prior to her daughter receiving a scholarship. She stays informed of foundation activities through things like the newsletter and attends foundation events.
She has met with foundation staff through her work at the American Cancer Society, United Way and AmeriCorps. Sharon also helped provide school supplies and donation for the Back to School event.
“I can’t tell you enough how much I, and my family, appreciate the foundation’s generosity and support in our community,” Sharon said.
