St. Clair County Cares… About Education!
Posted on August 3, 2011
Over the past two years, the St. Clair County Community Foundation has provided over $700,000 in funding through education-related grants and student scholarships. Many of those dollars have been directed to KnowHow2Go programs - an initiative that helps build a college-going culture in our community, in our schools, and with our families. In recognition of their success, the Community Foundation received a $50,000 challenge grant from the Kresge Foundation to support an endowment fund dedicated to college access initiatives.
The Community Foundation had just six months to raise $50,000 for the match, and thanks to strong community support, were successful! “The response from the community was amazing,” reports Lynn Alexander, the Community Foundation’s vice president. “Quite a few people gave generous donations, and then said come back to us if you’re close to the deadline and haven’t met the match.”
While the Kresge Challenge has been met, the Community Foundation will continue to raise funds for the College Access Endowment. “Our donors have told us this is important to them,” explains Alexander. “So I expect we will see this fund grow rapidly over the next few years.”
Over 12,000 students, parents and educators have participated in a KnowHow2Go program in the past two years. For more information on KnowHow2Go visit http://www.sccresa.org.
